So what is Lent?  Simply put, it is a time of spiritual preparation. Lent begins with Ash Wednesday and goes until the day before Easter. The word lent comes from the Anglo-Saxon word lencten, which means ‘spring’ and also relates to the number 40. Lent is the 40 days of preparation for Easter. Forty is a significant number throughout the Bible. In the great flood it rained 40 days and 40 nights. Moses spent 40 days and 40 nights on Mt. Sinai receiving the Ten Commandments and led his people through the wilderness for 40 years.
